During a 5-year period beginning July 1, 2010, The Community Wellness Project (CWP),
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, with offices in St. Louis, Missouri and East St. Louis,
Illinois, proposes to develop and implement HIV prevention programming under Category A
consisting of two evidence based interventions and an essential supporting service targeting
African Americans at high risk for HIV infection:
- Eight cycles per program year, of the Sisters Teaching Sisters about Topics on AIDS (SISTA) intervention
for 80-96 high risk, heterosexually active African American women ages 18 to 29 years
- HERMANA: The HERMANA Project is a social-skills training intervention for Latina women. It is aimed at reducing sexual risk behavior for HIV and other STDs. It is comprised of five 2-hour sessions, delivered by peer facilitators in a community-based setting. The sessions are gender specific and culturally relevant and include behavioral skills practice, group discussions, lectures, roleplaying, prevention video viewing, and take-home exercises. The intervention is based on Social Learning theory as well as the theory of Gender and Power. The HERMANA Project for Hispanic women has been adapted from the SISTA Intervention for African American women.
