The Prevention for Positives and High-Risk Negatives Intervention Course is part of a collaborative effort with The Community Wellness Project, Howard Brown Health Center and the Illinois Department of Public Health HIV/AIDS Section. The goal of this training is to enhance the abilities of community-based organizations and AIDS service organizations in implementing effective prevention programming for high-risk populations.
Course Description: This three-day course will provide participants with information on how to provide integrated prevention and risk reduction strategies to HIV positive and high-risk negative clients. Participants will learn how to enhance client-counselor communication, develop a comprehensive risk assessment, and assist clients in the development of a comprehensive risk reduction plan. Providers will also learn how to incorporate health promotion messages in their service-delivery by utilizing the stages of change model.

Effective Group Facilitation for Diverse Populations. This 2-day workshop is designed to enhance the skills involved in HIV and STD prevention education, relative to facilitating small and large group sessions effectively. It utilizes a very interactive format which includes group, pair and individual activities. The activities range from developing strategies and handling challenging group participants, to demonstrating techniques utilized in conducting activities in small and large group sessions.
- Participants will be able to explain the various stages of group development
- Participants will be able to identify the characteristics of adult learning
- Participants will be able to identify the difference between training and facilitation
- Participants will be able to identify the varying roles of a facilitator and know when to use each role appropriately and effectively
- Participants will be able to describe and model effective small group facilitation skills
- Participants will be able to develop techniques to manage participants who may be disruptive to their training sessions.
The SISTA project specifically targets sexually active African-American women. This group-level, gender- and culturally- relevant intervention, is designed to increase condom use with African American women. Five peer-led group sessions are conducted that focus on ethnic and gender pride, HIV knowledge, and skills training around sexual risk reduction behaviors and decision making. The intervention is based on Social Learning theory as well as the theory of Gender and Power.
RAPP targets sexually active women of reproductive age and their male partners. This community mobilization program, is designed to reduce risk for HIV and unintended pregnancy among women in communities at high risk by increasing condom use. This intervention relies on peer-led activities, including: outreach/one-on-one brief conversations with brochures, referrals, and condom distribution; small group safer sex discussions and presentations.
POL is a community-level intervention involves identifying, enlisting, and training key opinion leaders to encourage safer sexual norms and behaviors within their social networks through risk-reduction conversations.
d-up! is a community-level intervention designed for and developed by Black men who have sex with men (MSM). d-up! is a cultural adaptation of the POL intervention and is designed to promote social norms of condom use and assist Black MSM to recognize and handle risk related racial and sexual bias.
