Illinois:
Dear DHAP staff and contractors,

Joining forces with our Heightened National Response (HNR) and Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI) partners is essential as we work together to turn the HIV/AIDS epidemic around in our African American communities and to lessen the disproportionate burden that black men, women, and young adults bear. As the network of black leaders, organizations, and individuals committed to reversing the unacceptable course of the epidemic in black communities continues to grow, we must also recommit to our shared responsibility to stem the tidal wave of the HIV crisis in blacks that now results in 1 of every 16 black men and 1 in 30 black women receiving HIV diagnoses during their lifetimes.

We admire our HNR partners who continue to lead, finding innovative ways to spread HIV and AIDS prevention messages throughout the country. We are excited about our AAALI partners integrating HIV prevention into existing outreach programs—programs that will harness the collective strength and reach of these African American institutions. We are proud of our partnership with HNR leaders, and we are hopeful that both sets of partners—working with each and every one of us—will continue to increase HIV-related awareness, knowledge, and action within and throughout their communities across the United States.

In the May issue of ACT!ON, the HNR newsletter, you will learn about recent HNR activities and six new evidenced-based behavioral interventions, four of which directly address the needs of different populations of African Americans. We invite you to read about Act Against AIDS, a new national HIV prevention communication campaign that aims to increase awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS in the United States, promote HIV testing among African American men and women, and combat myths and misperceptions that contribute to the spread of HIV among blacks and other disproportionately affected populations.

The newsletter also provides additional information and opportunities for furthering our collective action to reduce the burden of HIV and AIDS in the United States.
